The Book of Remembrance was first commissioned by BAS Club to record the names of those FIDS and BAS staff lost in Antarctica. The red leather-bound volume is displayed in the BAS library in an oak case by cabinet maker Simon Almond, who also made the oak benches in the Memorial Orchard. All inscriptions are by specialist calligraphers, F G Marshall Ltd.
The Book of Remembrance was first unveiled in the BAS library during the official opening of the Memorial Orchard by Deputy Director, Robert Culshaw, at the BAS Club Reunion on 7 July 2012.
In 2016, the memorial book was temporarily removed from the library due to building work. During this period, club member, Dick Harbour arranged for the book to be updated, with funding provided by BAS. Additional pages were added to give a month-by-month memorial of all staff who died in service, both here and in Antarctica. It is again back on display in the new BAS library, which was completed in 2017.
